Kuching means 'cat' to most Malaysian ears, and the city leans into it with love — nowhere more so than at the Cat Museum, crowning Bukit Siol in Petra Jaya inside the Kuching North City Hall. You enter, naturally, through a giant cat's mouth.

Inside are thousands of exhibits spanning every feline angle imaginable: ancient Egyptian cat lore, Malay proverbs and folk beliefs, cat stamps, advertising, art and curiosities from around the world. It is gloriously quirky, family-friendly, and utterly Kuching.

Highlights

  • Thousands of cat artefacts, artworks and curiosities
  • The famous giant cat-mouth entrance
  • Hilltop views over Kuching from Bukit Siol
  • One of the world's very few museums devoted entirely to cats

Good to know

  • Entry is inexpensive (small fees may apply for cameras) — check current arrangements
  • Combine with the north-bank sights: the Astana grounds, Fort Margherita and Darul Hana Bridge
  • Great wet-weather option with kids

Getting there

The museum sits atop Bukit Siol in Petra Jaya on Kuching's north bank, about 15–20 minutes by car or Grab from the city centre.
