Before the bridges, travelling through central Sarawak meant queueing for a ferry, and the Rejang at Sibu is wide enough that this was a serious constraint on a whole division's economy. Lanang Bridge changed that, carrying the road across the river and joining Sibu to the country on the far bank.
It is a working bridge rather than an ornamental one, but it is a genuine landmark: the Rejang is Malaysia's longest river, and a structure that crosses it at this width is worth stopping to look at. The view from the Sibu bank, particularly with an express boat passing beneath, is the one people photograph.
