Lundu

Lundu's twin escapes — long golden sands and laid-back beach resorts on Sarawak's far west coast.

An hour and a half west of Kuching, the small town of Lundu is the doorway to two of Sarawak's best-loved beaches. Pandan Beach is the long, open one — a broad sweep of golden sand facing the South China Sea, beloved of weekend picnickers. Siar Beach, a few minutes away, is calmer and more sheltered, with low-key resorts and chalets under the casuarinas.

Together they make the classic Kuching weekend escape: swim, laze, eat, repeat — with Gunung Gading National Park (home of the rafflesia, the world's largest flower) close enough to fold into the same trip.

Highlights

  • Pandan Beach — one of the west coast's longest, most open sweeps of sand
  • Siar Beach's relaxed chalets and calm evening water
  • Legendary west-coast sunsets
  • Gunung Gading National Park (rafflesia country) nearby

Good to know

  • Weekends and public holidays get lively with local families; weekdays are blissfully quiet
  • Resorts at Siar Beach welcome day visitors to their cafés — check ahead
  • Combine with Gunung Gading if the rafflesia is blooming (call the park to ask)

Getting there

Lundu is about 1.5–2 hours' drive west of Kuching on a good sealed road; both beaches are a short hop from town. Self-drive is easiest — public transport to Lundu exists but is limited, and local rides from town are scarce.
