Ranchan is not Sarawak's most dramatic waterfall, and that is precisely why it is the most visited. A stream drops through a series of shallow cascades into pools shallow enough for children, under forest shade, with picnic shelters and changing facilities laid on around them. It sits just outside Serian, about an hour from Kuching.
Weekends and public holidays it fills up with Kuching families; on a weekday morning it can be almost empty. Serian itself is worth the stop for its market, and the Giam waterfall nearby offers a quieter alternative for anyone who finds Ranchan too busy.
