Miri City Fan is the city's central public park, named for the fan shape of its plan. Within it are a Chinese garden and an Islamic garden laid out as counterparts, a lake, an amphitheatre, playing courts and the public library — a deliberate attempt to give an oil town a civic centre that is not a shopping mall.
It works. Early morning and early evening the paths fill with walkers and runners, and the gardens are genuinely pleasant rather than merely municipal. For a visitor it is a half-hour rather than a half-day, but it is the most agreeable place in central Miri to spend that half-hour.
