Luak Bay sits just south of Miri, a sheltered curve of sand with a promenade along it, and it is where the city goes in the evening. Coco Cabana, the boardwalk-and-pavilion development at the northern end, added food outlets and a landscaped waterfront and turned the strip into the fixed item on every Miri itinerary.
Miri faces west into the South China Sea, which is the whole point: the sunsets are reliable and unobstructed, and the promenade is oriented to make the most of them. It is a city amenity rather than a wilderness beach, and none the worse for it.
